The Impact of Advanced Glycation End products (AGEs) on Diabetes and General Health, Jessica Black, ND

Diabetes has become a world wide epidemic. As the numbers of morbidity and mortality increase each year in relationship to diabetes, the disease is causing a significant impact on our healthcare system. Dietary causes of diabetes such as AGEs have been overlooked significantly in the treatment of diabetic individuals.

AGEs, advanced glycation end products, or glycotoxins, lead to advanced or accelerated aging. AGEs present a “cute” acronym because of how intimately connected to AGING they are.  AGEs are made endogenously and are also accumulated exogenously. We have control over both endogenous and exogenous AGEs. Endogenous AGEs is that they form in the presence of prolonged elevated blood sugar. AGEs are formed when glucose binds to amino acids and lipids in the body. Exogenous AGEs are found in many animal products that are high in protein and fat and can be increased through various cooking methods.

AGEs cause oxidative damage which in turn increases formation of more AGEs presenting our body with a vicious cycle. Abundance of AGEs leads to increased inflammation, kidney damage, Alzheimer’s, Diabetes, and many other chronic illnesses, including cardiovascular disease and diabetes.


Understanding Food Allergy and Sensitivity Testing in Clinical Practice, Wendy Hodsdon

The ability to identify and eliminate food allergens in the diet affects an individual’s health. The problem is that there are different methods of food allergy testing, and different ways to interpret results from these tests.  In this talk we will look at the information we can get from different types of food sensitivity tests.  We will look at some of the common problems interpreting IgG food allergy tests, and conditions successfully treated using this type of test.

Prescribing the Gluten-Free Diet (GFD) has supplied a powerful clinical dietary modality for the past decade for treatment of symptoms in a variety of systems.  “Gluten” and other wheat proteins are complex culprits in symptomatic pictures in patients with celiac disease, other autoimmune diagnoses and non-celiac gluten-sensitivity. Gluten-free diets now extend beyond wheat-free and on occasion delve into grain-free diets. The one common denominator among naturopathic physicians is an understanding that food is key to health and healing.  Diet is a foundational aspect of health.  There are many competing ideas regarding the best way to eat.  A search of the traditional approaches to diet among naturopathic physicians through time is instructive in understanding how one should eat to regain and maintain health.  Through such an effort can we gain an understanding of the best approach to healthy eating?  Dr. Zeff will explore this history, focusing upon the major dietary systems and ideas and try to develop a foundation for understanding what is the “perfect diet”.
